Agios Nikolaos

This is probably the nicest town in Crete, at least of those that we have seen. The town is clean, not overly developed and a bit upscale. So much so that we spent Euro 330 for dinner on Christoph and Kristian’s last night! I guess that lobster costs a ton …. There is a picturesque lake in the middle of the town which is maybe 200 m across and reputed to have limitless depth (otherwise known as 67 meters). The marina is run by a couple of Italians and it’s efficient, clean, has good fresh water (a rarity in Greece) and 24 hour security guards. So it’s a bit more expensive than the usual Euro 17.53 (or so) I get charged in town marinas in Greece. But it’s worth it since I will be here for a few days.

Yesterday and the day before we sailed to the far Eastern end of Crete, Cape Sidheros and back to here. Cape Sidheros is in part a military zone so one can’t go everywhere but we found a nice anchorage in a well protected if desolate bay. Nothing there except a fisherman’s hut and a couple of camping trailers. At night, there was no light ashore though. We were joined by a small fishing boat, operated by a man and his wife, who anchored close by. Apparently, they were just here for the night. It was a bit eerie when at around 9 pm, a loud, authoritative American voice came on the VHF: “Russian warship, Russian warship, this is American warship, Delta Echo, over”. Whatever that means. No response from the Russians inspite of a few repeats. Apparently, a Russian fighter jet went down into the Med earlier that day so there were some naval operations going on. We got ready for incoming cruise missiles by doubling up on Metaxas that night!
